Makalu Base Camp Trek is a thrilling adventure in the Himalayas, showcasing the beauty of Barun Valley and the world's fifth-highest mountain, Makalu. The trek begins in Chichila and extends to rhododendron forests, waterfalls, and glaciers. The journey is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts and experienced trekkers, with a 21-day duration and acclimatization stays at the right destination. The Makalu region is named after Mount Makalu, the world's fifth-highest mountain. The trek requires a good level of fitness and prior trekking experience, with steep ascents and descents, high altitudes, and rough terrain. It is recommended for experienced trekkers who are well-prepared physically and mentally.
The highlight of the trek is reaching Makalu Base Camp (4,870 meters), where panoramic views of peaks like Mount Makalu and Mount Everest are breathtaking. To trek in the Makalu region, two permits are required: the Makalu Barun National Park permit and the Restricted Area Permit (RAP). Hiring an experienced guide and porter is highly recommended for safety and comfort. The best time to trek is during the spring and autumn seasons, as winter can be extremely cold and the monsoon season brings heavy rainfall.
